Poor Qay..

It happened again. She is always the one getting charged by someone’s dog. Sheesh.

This time, it was a tiny white dog. We were walking this morning and across the street I see this dog RUNNING like her little tiny white butt was on fire. And behind her, a woman calling her name and running.

Well this little dog saw Qay and BOLTED over to “say hello”.

Qay thinks this is rude. Fortunatley, I had a good handle on her and sat her down. (and she sat! I was so proud). Meanwhile, this little thing is sniffing around.. trying to decide how much closer she wants to get! She’s about two feet away and Qay is having none of it. Qay really does well with dogs off leash. But on leash she is a different dog.

So, the woman runs up and sees us and says “Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry! Her leash broke!”.

The dog is not wearing a collar.
The owner does not have a leash in her hand.

She then decides to WALK WITH HER DOG. Yup.. you read that right.. she actually expected the dog to walk with her. I suggested, as nicely as I could that maybe she should PICK HER UP!

oy vey.

Qay did very well, I have to say. After a moment she settled back down and enjoyed the rest of our walk. Whew!

Bullmastiffs are Like Elephants

They never forget.

This morning I was walking Qay and across the street was a woman with her dog. My neighbor. Not a big deal.

Except once this dog charged at Qay. The owner opened her car door, not realizing we were on the block for a walk and the door BOLTED down the street and got right in Qay’s face.

Not cool.

The woman was astounded and said “I’m so sorry! I didnt’ see you! I thought she’d just run to the door of the house”.

Ok fine. Mistakes happen. But Qay has never forgotten. And she does not like this dog.

At all.

This woman has a habit of letting her dog off leash when she’s about 30 feet from her house. The dog runs right up to the door and waits.

This morning, I could see she was just about to do that.. we were across the street..

and her dog was eyeballing Qay. Big Time.

I yelled across the street, “Would you mind waiting until we are past you before you unhook her?”

She says,”WHAT?”

I repeat, “Would you please wait until we are past you before you unhook her?”

All I could see was this oblivious woman letting her dog loose.. and the dog running across the street and nailing Qay.. because the dog had that look like “she’s in my neighborhood.. lemme go tell her off”.

And her owner… duh.. had no clue because her dog “always runs to the door”. ahuh.

She says “WHY?”

At this point my options are kind of limited. We have been walking along and are almost past her. Qay is getting more and more ramped up because this other dog is giving her the eye. And of course, you know who would be blamed? Qay.. of course. Because she is the one who is reacting.. Sigh.

I could say “I don’t trust your dog to stay on her side of the street”.

or

“What are you stupid? Don’t you see what is going on here!?”

but instead, I took the road that would get results. Either one of those comments would cause this digbat to get defensive.

Instead, I chose to say :

“I’m asking you to, as a courtesy to please keep your dog on leash until we are past you. My dog will go nuts. It’s a simple courtesy. Would you please wait until we are past you”.

She says “Oh”.. like “duh”

Not for nothing, but I’ve notice a big difference in people who have dogs and people who understand dogs. If I was in her shoes, and didn’t see what was going on, and another dog owner asked me to do something as simple as holding off unleashing my dog for a moment, guess what? I would just do it.

Why? Because no matter how solid my own dog may be, things can change in an instant. Things that they “always do” may change.

You probably know by now that our furkids get a raw diet. Qor can’t have wheat or beef or her face blows up. And then bad things happen.. like eye surgery. Bleh.

Shel found this new stuff from Honest Kitchen called “Ice Pups” Ice Pups

We have long trusted Honest Kitchen because their quality is really good. Although the girls are eating Honest Kitchen food right now, we have used it in the past to supplement their diet. We thought this would be a fun treat.

Powder

From the Honest Kitchen Website

Ice pups can be served three ways – during the winter months, offer a warm, nourishing broth that tastes divine. Ideal after playing in the snow! In summer, serve Ice Pups as a chilled refreshing beverage, or freeze the liquid in ice cube trays to make a healthy, puppy-sorbet!
Ingredients:
Dehydrated Chicken, Turkey, Whey, Dandelion, Asparagus, Watercress, Honey, Parsley.
Ice Pups contain no grains, by-products, salt, sugar, artificial flavors, preservatives or fillers. .

It’s easy to make. You mix 2 Tablespoons with one cup of water. Ice Pups Powder

Of course, I have such big dogs that I made a double batch. IcePupsMixed

And instead of pouring into ice cube trays like any normal person, we went for the muffin tin!
MuffinTinFull

Into the freezer it goes.

Now at this point, I look down. Qay is staring at me. So I let her lick the measuring cup.
ParmaQay

Please ignore my floors. It’s really hopeless. Really.

WheresMine

Hey! Where’s Mine?

So I gave Qor a lick or two

Some for Qor

They were so not happy when that was gone! I had to make up another batch and give it to them as a “broth” or they never would have left me alone!

Today it was wicked hot so Shel gave them their “Ice Pup Hockey Puck”. They seemed to prefer it as a liquid but ate it anyway!

And the winner is…..

Things that go BOOM in the night

Or lately, the day!

We have had a run of thunderstorms.. big time. Every day for the past 3 days at 4PM like clockwork BOOM!

I’m so relieved that my dogs are not afraid of thunder or noises. I cannot imagine what the last few days must have been like.

This week reminded me of a conversation I had last year with a Canine Chiropractor Friend of mine. She told me about Through a Dog’s Ear Evidently this is music that has been engineered to be calming to dogs.

I was intrigued, so last year I emailed Dr. Susan Wagner who is the board-certified veterinary neurologist who assisted with the development of this series and asked her which one of the CD’s would be the best for thunderphobia and noise sensitivity. She suggested the original one Music to Calm Your Canine Companion, Volume 1

So here is the scoop. I’m running a contest. Leave me a comment about your dog and his or her thunderphobia. It doesn’t have to be a lot of info.. just tell me about your dog. Then all the names of the commenters will be put in a hat and my dog will pull a name. (Or I might use one of those random generator thingies.)

If you don’t win, there is still something for you. Every commenter will get a coupon code for 10% off a
Stainless Steel Enamel Dog Tag from Sew Crazy Dog Lady who also happens to be me.. :D

Contest entries are accepted until July 18th.
